Abstract

In this paper, an all-digital, ultra-wideband transmitter in 0.18μm CMOS is presented. The transmitter realizes impulse radio communication using 6-10GHz band with extremely low power and low complexity. Bi-phase modulation scheme is employed to generate pulses of 500ps duration and center frequency of 8GHz. Measured results show that the transmitter consumes 12pJ/b to achieve data rate of 750Mb/s. The generated pulses comply with the FCC spectrum mask. An optional embedded on-chip antenna and a power amplifier operating in 6-10GHz band are also designed as a future low cost solution for short distance communications.
