Abstract
Most cases of macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) can be classified as type 1, which is keratan sulfate (KS) negative, or type II (KS positive) by testing for the presence of KS in the cornea and in the serum. We examined a 55-year-old Japanese male who had MCD. Histochemical studies revealed that the patient's corneal stroma stained with anti-KS monoclonal antibody (5-D- 4). The KS level in the patient's serum, as determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, was within the normal range. These results confirmed the diagnosis of MCD type II.
