Abstract

A fast Viterbi decoding using the information of most-frequent symbol of convolutional code is proposed and its error performance on AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) channel is analyzed. The frequency of each symbol of received sequence is counted and a reduction of add-compare-select (ACS) operation is implemented by using the most-frequent symbol. The number of ACS operations can extremely be reduced, therefore, a fast decoding can be realized by the reduction of ACS, which occupy the dominant part of Viterbi decoder.
