N2 - This paper presents a waterflow vector sensor for an underwater drone and sea animal in deep sea. Measuring the velocity is important for estimating their conditions in underwater. However, radio and global positioning system (GPS) cannot be used in the deep ocean due to the rapid attenuation of radio waves in water. Thus, it is desired to monitor the relative waterflow velocity. Here we propose a compact spherical-shaped waterflow vector sensor. The differential pressure sensor elements are built-in in the spherical housing. The sensor element measures the differential pressure around the sphere structure via silicone membranes and incompressible liquid. Then, the measured differential pressures are converted into two-dimensional waterflow velocity. The developed sensor responded to waterflow from 0.4 m/s to 2.0 m/s, and the calibration data was applied to a regression model. The proposed sensor can be utilized to measure the relative waterflow velocity in deep sea.
