Abstract
Bending loss of GI-POFs is experimentally analyzed by varying their NAs and core diameters for designing their optimum waveguiding structures. It is confirmed that the bending loss of GI-POFs strongly depends on the fiber NA and core diameter, and that higher NA and smaller core diameter allow the low bending loss. However, the conventional analysis of bending loss in GI-POFs has not been necessarily focused on their real use in very short reach (VSL) networks. We investigate the bending loss of GI-POFs by adopting the launching condition expected in existing VSR optical links. As a result, it is indicated that both the core diameter smaller than 200 μm and the NA higher than 0.2 are required to realize 0 dB of bending loss even under UFL condition.
