Abstract

While it is generally believed that the role of light in phase-change process is simply to heat the material, we demonstrate that amorphisation process in both phase-change materials and chalcogenide glasses can proceed without going through the liquid phase. We discuss the crucial role that resonant bonding and bonding energy hierarchy play in athermal amorphisation.
