Abstract
The authors study automatic estimation of an input signal's characteristics, type such as modulation type, carrier frequency, and symbol rate from a received digital signal. Automatic estimation of an input signal is used to realize an intelligent demodulator which can demodulate any type of input signal automatically. They discuss the discrimination between PSK (phase-shift-keyed) and MSK (minimum-shift-keyed) signals. Using the proposed method, it is shown by computer simulation that they can be precisely discriminated when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than equivalent to 5 dB. They then estimate the carrier frequency. Using computer simulations, estimation errors are within 10% when SNR greater than equivalent to 5 dB.
