Abstract

In recent years, the shape of industrial products has become important. In the conventional study, total absolute curvature was proposed as an index of 'complexity' on curved surface shapes. However, the proposed index has not been applied to the research aiming to support design activities. Therefore, this research proposes a curved surface shape generation method based on the index. The method can generate the shapes having desired value of the index, using Non-Uniform Rational B-spline (NURBS) surface and Particle Swarm optimization (PSO). In addition, to validate the proposed method, this research generated the shapes of coupe-typed automobiles using the method and conducted a sensory evaluation about'complexity'. The coefficient of determination between the sensory evaluation values and the index is 0.95, which indicates that the proposed method can generate the shapes corresponded to human perceived'complexity'.
