Abstract

Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is a type of passive damping device based on liquid column motion in a U-tube. We have designed a novel semi-active TLCD that uses a magnetic fluid (MF) as a working fluid. This device, called MF-TLCD, can change its natural frequency in response to a varying magnetic field. Two electromagnets were used and a magnetic field was applied symmetrically to both sides of the magnetic fluid column. The frequency response of the MF-TLCD apparatus was measured, and the influence of magnetic fields on the natural frequency of the magnetic fluid column was investigated.
