Abstract
The widely accepted 7/24 tapered shank tools presently meets new demands such as high precision or high speed machining. The tools are not going to satisfy these demands, as the 7/24 tapered shank tool is mounted onto the spindle through only a tapered bore. Thus, a new industrial standard has proposed by Germany. The tool is mounted onto the spindle through both a flange bearing face and a tapered shank. It is said that this provides high stiffness and good positional accuracy. However, the deformation and contact pressure distribution of the interface of a tool shank and a spindle at high rotational speeds has not been made clear. Therefore, in this paper, assuming that hollow shank is axially symmetric, the deformation and contact pressure distribution are simulated by using the finite elements methods. From the results, it is pointed out that the tapered surface of the hollow shank partially separates from the tapered bore at any rotational speed.
