One of us (JWW) is indebted to Keio University for an appointment as visiting professor in December 1982 during which a portion of this study was carried out. The assistance of Michael Darzi and the staff of the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at Florida State University in carrying out the PIXE analyses is gratefully acknowledged. This study is part of a general investigation of pollution aerosol sulfur transport in the atmosphere supported in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

N2 - During April 1980 aerosol particles were sampled at five locations in Japan for a week which included an especially strong dust storm derived from the Asian mainland. Time sequence sampling by streakers and PIXE analysis for multi-elemental concentrations in 2. 4 hr time steps recorded the passage of the storm over Japan. At Niigata, three distinct components could be identified: soil dust represented by Fe, sea spray represented by Cl, and air pollution represented by S. The three had different arrival and disappearance times although they were all present during most of the storm.
