Abstract

In order to determine fundamental effects and to allow new applications of tapered pneumatic transmission lines, their dynamic characteristics were investigated, using step pressure inputs. Various wave phenomena in a compound system of tapered tubes, e.g. in the combination of tapered and linear tubes, and in a tapered tube with an arbitrary cross section are theoretically and experimentally studied. The pressure histories are characterized by dimensionless parameters, for example, which indicate the tapered effect of a tube, the effect of viscosity of a gas, the effect of capacity of a tank and so on. The period of the pressure wave and the attenuation of the pressure wave are strongly influenced by these parameters. (A)
