Evaluation of uterine growth with low dose estrogen replacement therapy on ultrasonography in Turner syndrome, panpituitary hormone deficiency and other diseases

Abstract

High dose estrogen inhibits growth, and so the dose of replacing estrogen must be low to patients who are ongrowing. On the contrary uterine size must be enlarged by administration of estrogen. We evaluated the differences of the uterine growth with low dose estrogen replacement therapy (LDERT) in Turner syndrome (TS) (16 cases), panpituitary hormone deficiency (PD) (4 cases), Prader-Willi syndrome (PW) (1 case), bulimia nervosa (1 case) and ovarian dysfunction (OD) (2 cases). We repeatedly measured uterine length, width and anterioposterior diameter by using ultrasound. We also calculated uterine volume and fundal-cervical ratio (FCR). In TS, PD and PW small uterine volume continued even with LDERT but in bulimia nervosa and one case of OD was normalized. In TS, PW and one case of PD, FCR continued to be small and otherwise normalized. In conclusion, ultrasound measurements showed that LDERT was insufficient to normalization of uterine in TS, PD and PW.
