Abstract

We proposed a highly scattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymer and applied it to a light pipe of a backlighting system for liquid crystal displays. Although the HSOT polymer backlighting system was composed of fewer parts than those of the conventional transparent one, the HSOT polymer backlighting system showed not only twice the brightness but also twice the efficiency of the conventional one. In addition, the HSOT polymer backlighting system had no degradation of color uniformity due to scattering in the HSOT polymer.
