Abstract

We analyze the performance of the wireless integrated multiple access (WIMA) protocol by applying the fixed contention non-interleaved-frame fixed-length (F-NIFFL) scheme, in which hybrid contention/reservation channel-access schemes are used in integrated voice/data wireless networks. In the proposed scheme, some data packets are first transmitted in the contention-based slots, and the packets which collided or were not transmitted are transmitted in the later reserved slots. A two-dimensional first-order Markov chain model is used for our analysis, and we show that the proposed protocol can decrease the data-packet delay compared to the conventional WIMA with pure reservation NIFFL (PR-NIFFL) scheme, in which all data packets are sent under the reservation access protocol. Therefore, the proposed protocol is more effective in satellite communication networks which may have large round-trip propagation delay.
