An advanced power-saving mechanism based on a combination of a cyclic sleep function and an adaptive link rate (ALR) function for 10Gbit/s Ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON) systems is proposed. The cyclic sleep function varies the sleep period to optimise power-saving performance according to frame inter-arrival time. The ALR function has dual-threshold policy to prevent the frequent switching of link rates. The proposed hybrid mechanism provides effective power-saving performance on the basis of traffic conditions.
