Abstract

We attained heavy Tb3+-doping into a SiO2 matrix up to 22.8 mol% in Tb2O3 concentration by sol-gel process using terbium nitrate. Co-doping of Al3+ and/or Na+ led to the improvement on photoluminescence characteristics: The 5D3 emission was observed at low Tb3+ concentration, indicating an inter-ionic resonant energy transfer, and the intensity of 5D4 emission increased up to 10 mol% with increasing Tb3+ concentration in co-doped samples. The effect of Al3+ and Na+ on the glass network and neighboring configuration of Tb3+ is discussed based on the optical spectra.
