Laser hot balloon catheter: a novel approach to overcome PTCA defects

Abstract

A new type of laser heating PTCA (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty) balloon has been developed which is capable of uniform shallow layer heating around epithelium. The features of this laser hot balloon is rapid increasing and decreasing temperature. Balloon temperature of 60°-70°C has been demonstrated during 15s duration. The in vitro experiment using extracted porcine coronary artery revealed restricted heating layer within artery wall. The low applied pressure to the laser hot balloon induced excellent dilatation of the artery than conventional PTCA. An evaluation of chronic in canine stenosis model developed in the femoral artery showed excellent restenosis-rate reduction by the hot balloon.
