Abstract

New phenylpyrimidine type ferroelectric liquid crystals were synthesized and their mesomorphic and physical properties were studied. These compounds have chiral carbon directly linked to core part or methylene unit between chiral carbon and core aromatic ring. The internal methylene unit stabilizes liquid crystal phases thermally without increasing rotational viscosity. Sign of spontaneous polarization, twist sense of cholesteric phase and smectic C* phase do not exhibit odd- even effet concerned with internal methylene chain length.
