Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-coated capillaries can be used in many different application areas in which electroosmotic flow (EOF) suppression and avoidance of solute adsorption are prerequisites for high-efficiency separations. The chemical and surface properties of PVA capillaries are described in detail. Separations of proteins and glycoproteins using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and isoelectric focusing (IEF) are also discussed, as are the separations of strongly basic substances, amines and drugs on PVA capillaries. Poly(vinyl alcohol) capillaries are suitable for the analysis of chiral substances using chargeable cyclodextrins and because of the absence of EOF they can be used in the separations of small inorganic ions and organic acids.
