Abstract
We report a rare case of a patient with atlantoaxial posterior dislocation without fracture who survived, and also discuss the mechanism and clinical presentation of this dislocation. Reduction was safely accomplished by adjusting the weights and direction of skull traction without anaesthesia. Atlantoaxial fusion was considered unnecessary because atlantoaxial instability was not permanent, so we employed external fixation only. This dislocation was caused by simultaneous distraction force as well as hyperextension force.
