Precipitation of Rare Earth Compounds in LiCI-KCI Eutectic

The 3:1 compounds of KC1 and RECI, K3REC16 (RE = Gd, Y, and Yb) precipitate from the LiCl-KCl eutectic melt containing trivalent rare earth species, RE (III), at 723 K. In the presence of O2-RE2O3 and/or REOC1 precipitate from the melt. In the case of Gd, the formation of Gd2O3 and GdOCl strongly depends on O2- ion concentration in the melt. Only Y2O3 precipitates selectively from the melt while REOC1 precipitates selectively when RE = La and Nd. The relative stability of REOC1 against RE203 thermodynamically evaluated for the same melt condition, shows REOC1 is preferentially formed for light earths while the formation of RE2O3 is dominant for heavy earths.
