Abstract

The authors propose a range-extended tangent (RE-TAN) type of DSP FM demodulator. It has the following features: (1) The linear detection range is much wider than for any other conventional DSP FM demodulator. (2) The allowable range of parameters in RE-TAN are much wider than for any other DSP FM demodulator. (3) RE-TAN can demodulate both narrowband and wideband FM. Its sampling frequency is much lower than conventional DSP FM demodulators, even if the incoming signal is wideband FM. (4) RE-TAN consists only of open-loop circuits. Therefore, it is not required to consider the influence of phase delay. RE-TAN can be applied to wire communication systems, wireless communication systems, digital audio and TV, among others.
