Abstract
Silica glasses codoped with cerium and fluorine were prepared by plasma torch chemical vapour deposition and the effects of fluorine on the valency and emission properties of the cerium ions were studied. Codoping with fluorine was found to have no effect on these properties, while there was a marked effect from codoping with aluminium or phosphorus, as has been reported previously. Raman spectroscopic studies showed most of the fluorine to be bonded to silicon and it is therefore concluded that fluorine neither becomes incorporated into nor influences the coordination of anions around cerium ions. The structural roles of the fluorine are discussed.
