Abstract

The FI signals of dense Rb atoms were observed, and the dependence of the decay rate on B0, P and θ was obtained. Results were quantitatively interpreted as the intrinsic dynamics of highly polarized multilevel atoms under the influence of the spin-exchange interaction. The time evolution of atomic coherence was obtained by numerically integrating the nonlinear Liouville equation. The cross section of the spin-exchange collision was measured to be 3.5 × 10-18 m-2 by fitting the calculated dependence of the linewidth on B0, P, θ, and NRB.
