Abstract
We improved humidity stability of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based graded-index plastic optical fibers (GI POFs) by using a hydrophobic dopant, which is incorporated for GI profile formation. Under high humidity conditions, scattering loss of the PMMA-based GI POF significantly increased, suggesting that absorbed water could be aggregated in the GI POF. The infrared (IR) microscopic observation of the absorbed water distribution in the GI POFs shows that the penetration of absorbed water into a core center of the GI POF was suppressed by the hydrophobic dopant which has the property of repelling the absorbed water.
