Improvements in cast ingot and multicrystalline silicon solar cells are reviewed in this paper. The current status of the performance of the cells using cast multicrystalline substrate is discussed. Conversion efficiencies of over 17% and 15% have been obtained for cells with cell areas of 4 cm2 and over 100 cm2, respectively. Explanations for improvements in large-area solar cells with cell areas of 100 cm2 and 225 cm2 are presented. The cost prediction and energy pay-back time for the multicrystalline silicon solar module are reviewed. Applications of the multicrystalline silicon solar cell are also described.
