The temperature and heating rate of laser-cooled ions in a Penning trap was determined using Doppler laser spectroscopy. The ion temperature was measured as a function of time after turning off the laser-cooling. The trapped ion plasma undergoes a rotation about the magnetic-field axis due to the crossed electric and magnetic fields in a Penning trap. It was found that the observed heating is due to collisions with the ∼4×10-9 Pa residual gas of the vacuum system.
