Abstract

Dynamic lateral deflection characteristics of a spinning 3. 5-inch flexible disk caused by a point contact head are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Measured natural frequencies of the lowest three circumferential modes for a spinning 3. 5-inch disk were in good agreement with the theoretical values if a certain amount of circumferential initial negative stress was taken into account. It was further found that the dynamic disk deflection caused by the penetration of a point contact head can be theoretically predicted if one takes account of the initial disk deflection and the initial negative stress identified from the comparison between experimental and theoretical natural frequencies for the stationary disk.
