Abstract

In 8 patients with moderate hypertension, aged between 59 and 73 years, we measured excretion of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EN) per 1 mg of urine creatinine in order to evaluate the sympathetic activity during either gastrectomy or cholecystectomy. Catecholamines were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography using a native fluorescence detector. During the surgery, we observed no significant increase in NE and EN excretion. The results suggest that this anesthetic procedure can suppress the intra-operative rise in sympathoadrenal activity.
