Abstract

Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) based smart pixels are key devices to interconnect VLSI chips, with high throughput at both the inter-and intra-board level. VCSEL based smart pixels are applicable to parallel optical interconnection systems. A one-chip optoelectronic parallel processing system with one thousand processor elements and 600 Gbps total I/O throughput is possible when smart pixel arrays are fabricated under the 0.25-μm CMOS design.
