This paper describes a tissue-fabrication method utilizing with 'cell fiber': a core-shell hydrogel fiber encapsulating cells in the core. We use coaxial microfluidic channels to fabricate collagen/alginate or fibrin/alginate core-shell fibers. Rat primary cardiomyocytes were well cultured within the fibrin-based cell fiber, successfully contracting with the alginate shell. By twisting up cardio-fibers, we can easily prepare coiled tublar tissues. This approach would be applicable for the rapid biofabrication of large-scaled 3D tissues.
