This paper clarifies some of the problems of a traditional management method in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) or a computer integrated manufacturing system (CIM) and suggests a distributed autonomic management method to solve such problems. In particular, a discussion of the proposed method focuses on tool management. Then, an intelligent cutting tool that is constructed using memory, sensors, and a processor is proposed. Also a distributed autonomic tool management method based on intelligent cutting tools is presented. In the proposition of the intelligent cutting tool, the concept of the cutting tool, the functions of the three parts constructing the cutting tool, and a tool information model are described.
