Second harmonic generation from silica glasses was successfully controlled by doping an impurity. A trace amount of sodium ions was introduced into pure silica glass by coating polymer or sol-gel silica films containing sodium and subsequent electrical poling. A frozen electric field formed by the drift of sodium ions is suggested to induce the second-order nonlinearity localized in the anode surface region of silica glass plates.
