EXTENDABILITY CONSIDERATIONS IN THE DESIGN OF THE DISTRIBUTED COMPUTER SYSTEM (DCS).

The Distributed Computer System (DCS) is an experiment in local networking and distributed computing being carried out at the University of California, Irvine under NSF auspices. The DCS is designed to economically allow mini- and midi-computers to interconnect with the 2 megahertz data ring which forms the communication subsystem of the network. This paper examines the techniques for extending the geographical coverage of the DCS by creating rings of rings and by interconnecting the DCS system to more conventional packet switching systems such as the ARPANET.
