FineSlider is an input device in a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that is rapidly able to select one item from a large sequential database. This could be a clock (numerical data) or a dictionary (textual data). FineSlider is similar to a general slider in that it has a scale corresponding to the range of data and a knob for movement along this scale. However, it differs from a general slider in that the open area of the slider that the knob does not occupy is the fine adjustment area. By using this open area of the slider users can select an item from data rapidly and precisely. This paper will introduce the FineSlider and discuss experiments pertaining to its implementation.
