The development of cerebral cortex is regulated by complex mechanisms. Various classes of neurons migrate from the proliferative zones to the cortex according to a spatiotemporal manner. There are two distinct modes of neuronal migration: radial migration and tangential migration. In the benefit of the advancement of research techniques such as in utero electroporation and time-lapse observation of living tissues, more aspects of the cell and molecular mechanisms that control these two migration modes and their roles in the cortical development have been clarified.
