This paper presents the operation of a compact blue laser by a solid-state dye thin-film ring resonator. The active medium of a dye laser, which is ordinarily in a liquid phase, is solidified by doping a laser dye into several solid materials. We used coumarin 120 or stilbene 3 as laser dye, and observed that a solid state dye laser oscillates in the blue region. A nitrogen laser (at 337 nm wavelength) serves as the pump source. Dye-doped thin-films are dip-coated on surfaces of cylindrical glass rods. The thin films having a ring structure, provide feedback action for laser operation around the circumference of the rods.
