T1 - Pictorial symbols in context - A means for visual communication in cross-cultural environments

N2 - Pictorial symbols capture our imagination a lot. A visual vocabulary - that anyone from any culture, any country, and in any context of life can understand is a very interesting research challenge. The collections of visual symbols usually are context specific such as symbols and signs at airports, in hotels, in traffic and in maps. Our research is related to pictorial symbols which we face in our living environments and which symbolize our living environments. We design, implement and experiment a cross-cultural communication system (IMAGE) which is based on pictorial symbols related to living environments in Japan and in Finland. In our work-in-progress we create a set of pictorial symbols - a visual vocabulary - related to our living environments. We represent, manipulate and analyze real-world objects used in our living environments as images based on pictorial symbols. By these symbols we realize communication between different cultures. We also develop content-based image search system with color and shape analysis mechanisms. Our IMAGE-system provides a culture and language dependent way to create, share and experience environmental symbols and images. It is a step towards universal communication language.
