We investigated influence of the microscopic core heterogeneities on modal noise in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based graded-index plastic optical fibers (GI POFs). The speckle contrast of the output mode interference pattern was theoretically evaluated with consideration of random mode coupling due to the heterogeneities, using the developed coupled power equation. The results suggest that modal noise can be decreased in the PMMA-based GI POF through random power transition with little mode-dependent loss.
