A W-shaped POF with an index valley in the refractive index profile is proposed. It is demonstrated that bandwidth performance of a W-shaped POF is higher than that of GI POFs. W-shaped POFs are expected to be used under the overfilled mode launch (OML) condition as well as restricted mode launch (RML) condition because W-shaped index profile reduces the group-delay of higher order modes. In this study, W-shaped POFs with different core sizes are fabricated and then, their propagating modes characteristics are investigated. The bandwidth properties of two fibers with different core size are analyzed in detail. It is confirmed that the bandwidth properties are not largely depending on the core sizes. In addition, differential mode attenuation (DMA) of each fiber after 20-turn bending on a mandrel with 10-mm radius is measured. The DMA of Fiber 2 with smaller core is lower than that of Fiber 1 with larger core in almost all the modes.
