Abrasive jet machining (AJM) is a novel machining processes to fabricate functional surfaces. In this study, the removal mechanism of the impact by particles has been investigated. Firstly, the effect of the impact of a single alumina particle impacting on the glass substrate was studied. It was found that when the particle velocity was less than 16.2 m/s, lateral cracks were not formed. Next, the effect of multiple alumina particles was studied. The threshold condition of the quantity of the impacting particles that the cracks accumulate on the blasting area was determined to be 15 mg/mm2. It is thought that existing cracks blocked the formation of the crack at the quantity of impacting particles of more than 15 mg/mm2.
