The spatial extents of the concentration changes in hemoglobin caused by brain activation are investigated by an ANOVA-based statistical analysis. The spatial extents are strongly affected by the wavelength dependence of the optical path length. This influence can be successfully corrected by the optical path length predicted by the previously reported experimental method. The spatial extents of the concentration change in deoxygenated hemoglobin caused by auditory stimulation tend to be smaller than that in oxygenated hemoglobin.
