Clinical, histopathological characteristics and prognosis of small-sized gastric carcinomas less than 2 cm in maximal diameter of the lesion were studied in a series of 1219 cases of gastric carcinomas operated from 1964 to 1977. The mean age of 84 (6.9%) patients with small-sized gastric carcinoma was ten years younger than that of all cases. 43 (51.2%) patients had upper abdominal complaints and 19 (22.6%) cases had no clinical symptoms. They were classified into two groups by maximal diameter; 24 (28.6%) cases less than 1.0 cm and 69 (71.4%) cases from 1.1 to 2.0 cm in diameter. The early gastric carcinoma was proved histologically in 87.5% and 70.0%, respectively, and 10-year actuarial survival rates were 83.6% in the former and 71.1% in the latter. Seven cases in the latter group died of recurrence.
