Turbulent flow characteristics in a rectangular channel with repeated rib roughness

The turbulent flow structure over a repeated-rib geometry rough-walled surface was investigated in connection with a two dimensional square rib roughness which was set on the internal surface of a rectangular channel. The upper plate with ribs of the same pitch can be shifted to arbitrary positions. Reynolds number of duct flow was set to 2.0×104, which was similar to the condition of practical heat exchangers. Flow measurements were performed using a compact fiber laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) probe. The results of the detailed flow measurements indicated that a recirculating flow existed behind the rib on symmetric and staggered rib geometries. A remarkable large peak value of Reynolds shear stress was observed behind the rib on the staggered rib geometry.
