A description is given of a unified design methodology and device architecture as one of the most effective solutions for application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) requirements. Design unification has been established which makes it possible to accumulate and utilize various designs as library, regardless of the generation of the original design. Key issues in device unification are discussed from the viewpoint of structural and hierarchical device architecture. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by the application to a series of microcontrollers.
