N2 - Video distribution over an optical ring network based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) techniques is described. The network has the flexibility and reliability needed for broadband multimedia access, including anticipated high-quality video. The properties and multimedia access algorithms of the proposed ring network are described. The flexible path concept, essential for efficient video distribution, is also described. A video distribution system design is shown along with video signal characteristics and an evaluation of multiplexing performance. Cell loss protection methods utilizing robust layered coding and cell-loss protection algorithms are discussed.
